Our Approach to Doing Things Thoughtfully
We want to be honest with you from the start: we're a young, small business, and we don't think it would be right to call ourselves "sustainable" as though it were a finished achievement. It isn't a badge you earn once. It's a set of choices you try to make well, again and again — and we're still early in that journey. Here's where we genuinely stand today.
The materials we choose
Everything we make begins with a natural, plant-based fibre — jute, seagrass, water hyacinth, rattan or cotton — rather than plastic or synthetic material. These are renewable: they grow, they're harvested, and they grow again. Jute in particular is a fast-growing annual crop that needs little irrigation, relying mostly on natural rainfall.
Water hyacinth is the fibre we're proudest to work with. It's an invasive aquatic weed that chokes rivers and waterways across South Asia. Harvesting it to weave into something useful turns an environmental nuisance into a home you can enjoy for years.
Made by hand, made to last
Our pieces are woven by hand by skilled artisans, not mass-produced by machine. We choose durability on purpose. A well-made basket, cared for gently, can stay useful in your home for many years — and the longer something lasts, the less often it needs replacing. We see longevity as the most honest form of environmental care we can offer right now.
Where we're honest about the limits
We don't want to overstate things, so:
- A few of our pieces — such as our sage seagrass planter set — include a plastic liner, because a planter holding damp soil needs protecting if it's going to last. Where a piece isn't purely natural, we say so on its product page.
- We haven't yet measured the full carbon or water footprint of our products, so we don't make specific claims about those figures. We'd rather stay quiet than guess.
- Our products travel from Bangladesh and China to the UK, which carries a real environmental cost. We're honest that shipping is part of our footprint.
What we're working towards
We're a growing business, and there's a lot we still want to do — learning more about the workshops we partner with, improving our packaging, and understanding our impact properly rather than assuming it. As we make real progress, we'll update this page and tell you plainly. We'd rather earn your trust slowly and honestly than claim more than we can stand behind.
